Pebble Beach & The best golf of the west coast

America
The 17 Mile Road & California's Coast
Golf in USA

Almost half of all the golf courses in the world are in the USA – although not all of them are Championship Courses. Most of the ones which are open to the general public (you don’t need to be invited by a club member) are on the West Coast: Torrey Pines, Pebble Beach, Chambers Bay, Pacific Dunes, Pasatiempo, etc.

Every devoted golfer wishes to tee it off at 18th Hole in Pebble, walk among deer in Spyglass, visit Alister Mackenzie’s Home Course Pasatiempo, play the South Course at Torrey Pines or feel like being in Scotland when playing Bandon Dunes. With Redan Golf Travel Experts, all these lifetime experiences are possible.

The Most important fact to consider?

Although you can play all along the West Coast, it’s better to select one of the specific sub regions and play all the courses available around there. The time of year you select is crucial to avoid fog and rain!
Although all the golf courses here are of great quality, they are very different between them: Torrey Pines (San Diego) has nothing to do with Spyglass (Pebble), Pasatiempo or Bayonet (Carmel), Half Moon Bay (San Francisco), Old Macdonald or Chambers Bay (Oregon). That’s why you should first choose the area and then the courses.
If you are lucky enough to know a Member, you may tee it off at Riviera (LA), Cypress Point (Carmel) or even Olympic Club (San Francisco).

 Where to fly?

US has a wide net of Airways and Airports. From abroad, the best option is to fly to San Francisco or Los Angeles and then drive or take a short fly to the selected destination.

 Lodging options?

For Torrey Pines the best call is San Diego. In Palm Springs there are many options, La Quinta Resort would probably be the most complete alternative, or the Indian Wells Resort. In Carmel we suggest any of the Boutique Hotels in Town or the Hyatt Regency next to Del Monte Golf Course, one of the hosts of the AT&T National ProAm.
In San Francisco you can stay in the city, the Half Moon Bay Resort or any of the Lodges at Napa Valley like Sonoma. In Bandon Dunes the Resort is the only option, but it’s one of the best in the World.

Too many options, one trip is not enough

We will describe some of the best options on each area, taking into account there is a bigger amount of courses you can visit during your trip:

San Diego
- Torrey Pines North and South: host of US Open 2008, where Tiger Woods won his up to date last Major Championship. Both courses are public.
- Los Cabos in México: this is a great option to be combined with San Diego, playing courses like Palmilla.

Palm Springs
This is not a Coastal destination. It’s on the mountains, 2 hours away from Los Angeles. It has many Resorts like Indian Wells o La Quinta, and more than 50 first class golf courses. The destination hosts of the Humana Classic PGA Tour Event and has a wide variety of things to do, apart from golf. You can even go in February and watch the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament!.
TPC Stadium Course, Nicklaus Signature, Mountains, Dunes and Norman are the courses at La Quinta Resort. We can also add the two at Indian Wells (Players and Tournament) to make it a great golf trip.

Monterey - Carmel
This is maybe the best destination if you consider the great golf courses and the extra golf activities available. Pebble Beach, Spyglass and Spanish Bay plus Black Horse and Bayonet have no rivals when it comes to golf.
But the course you MUST play is Pasatiempo Golf Club, home Course of Alister Mackenzie – he once said the back nine are the best holes he designed in his career.

San Francisco
It’s a beautiful city, with lots of things to see and do, including Alcatraz Jail and two great courses at Half Moon Bay. There are also a lot of private courses like Green Hills, Olympic Club or even Cypress Point are near, so if you are lucky to know a Member, maybe you can play some of them.

Bandon Dunes & Chambers Bay
The great Chambers Bay will host the 2015 US Open 2015 (it already hosted the 2010 US Amateur) and it’s a Course that will marvel golfers like Whistling Straits did in 2004. A great complement for Bandon Dunes, usually called “Scotland in USA”.
These programs can be booked all year long and there’s no need for much anticipation. Just avoid the dates with Professional events hosted in the Courses.

Recommended Programs
Here we detail some of the recommended programs we can produce.

Carmel 7 nights and 6 rounds: three nights stay at Spanish Bay Inn, plus 4 nights at Hyatt Regency Monterey. Golf at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Spanish Bay, Bayonet, Black Horse and Pasatiempo.

Palm Springs: our suggestion is to go during Indian Wells Masters 1000 Tennis Tournament, 7 nights at La Quinta and 6 rounds at PGA West Stadium, PGA West Nicklaus, Mountains, Dunes, Norman and Tournament at Indian Wells.

Bandon Dunes: a golf only trip (there’s nothing around the resort!). 6 nights and 5 rounds at Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Crossings, and Bandon Trails & Old Macdonald. We can add Chambers Bay when arriving or departing.
