Spain, specially the “Costa del Sol”, is one of the best golf destinations in the World. This is not only because of the golf courses, but also due to the fantastic Spanish food and all the activities available apart from playing the game. The area has more than 300 sunny days a year, which guarantee that playing conditions will be the best. Marbella and Sotogrande are the best location to choose the most famous golf courses.
This part of the country has hosted many Tour events, including the 1997 Ryder Cup, where Seve Ballesteros was the European Captain who led his team into a thrilling victory.
There are many land and air options to arrive in Malaga; it just depends on where you come from. If you have a long haul flight, you need to land in Madrid or Barcelona and then reach the land of sunny days, great golf and the best Paella in the world, by plane, car, or train (whatever suits you best)
Lodging can vary widely according to the location selected: nice boutique hotels at the Casco Viejo in Marbella, some of the new hotels outside the city like Guadalmina, the Vasari Resort in Puerto Banus or the Hotel Marítimo de Sotogrande. All these options will work great for a group of golfers.
For those willing to spend some more money, the luxurious 5* Hotel at Finca Cortesín is maybe the best hotel in the area, and one of the best in the whole country.
There are so many good options to choose from, that the final decision has to be taken according to budget and place to stay. There are more than 60 golf courses from Malaga to Cadiz, with a great variety of design and topography: Marbella Club or La Cala (Mountain Courses); Atalaya, Los Naranjos or Aloha (Classic Parklands); Valderrama, Real Sotogrande, Finca Cortesín or San Roque (top venues by top designers) or those courses with the nicest views of the Ocean, like Alcaidesa Links.
The 1997 Ryder Cup Host, is a mandatory choice for those who really enjoy playing Tour venues. A great design by R. T. Jones Sr, maintained at top level, with the fastest greens you can imagine.
a 1964 design by RT Jones Sr. and host of many Open de España, is another must. Although private, it is a course where we can provide access all year long – except on August. A great design, pristine shaped greens, a very nice Club House and a wonderful par 3 Course make the Real Sotogrande a mandatory stop for every golfer visiting Spain.
host of the Volvo Match Play, and San Roque Old are other courses to be considered. Both are very well maintained and have top level crew service.
In Marbella & Puerto Banús there are many good options, but we will mention our three most recommended: Real Golf Club Las Brisas, Aloha and Los Naranjos, all located not more than 5kms away from most of our suggested lodging options in the area.
Alcaidesa Links: located by the Ocean, with fantastic views of the Gibraltar Rock.
Real Golf Club de Sevilla: 2hs away from Puerto Banús, this great design by Chema Olazábal has hosted the Open de España.Some other courses to be considered are new options like Valle Romano or Marbella Club and some of the older ones like Río Real, Atalaya or El Parador.
Golf’s high season is totally opposite to Hotels high season, but mid-season or shoulder times can be found, where you can combine good prices both for golf and lodging. Not much anticipation is needed, except if you wish to play all top courses in a short period of time. Usually 2 months in advance you will enable the exact trip that you wish to do.
May (making sure to avoid maintenance schedule on all courses) or some time during September or beginning of October, will give you the best conditions for this golf trip. All the same, golfers can visit this destination all year long.
Arrival to Spain and stay there for 7 nights, being Puerto Banus the best option.
5 rounds of golf: Valderrama, Real Sotogrande, Finca Cortesín, La Reserva & Real Golf Club Las Brisas.
One free day in the middle of the week to chill out at the beach, travel to Morocco or maybe play Real Golf Club de Sevilla.
Van rental is recommended, self-Driving is the best option in this area.
We do not recommend golfing on your departure day, unless your flight schedule gives you the time.
